The Story Behind the Saint Didier Shipwreck

A WWII Vessel Lost to the Mediterranean

Saint Didier was a French ship sunk by British aircraft during World War II. Although it flew a hospital flag and claimed non-combat status, the vessel was later found to contain ammunition, weapons, and military vehicle parts. Today, it rests silently beneath the waves—a submerged time capsule frozen in 1942.

The ship’s journey began when the French government, aligned with Germany, attempted to send military supplies to its forces in Syria and Lebanon. Turkey, maintaining neutrality during the war, refused passage through its territory. As a result, the cargo was rerouted through Thessaloniki and loaded onto two commercial ships: Qued Yquem and Saint Didier.

On July 4, 1941, Qued Yquem was sunk off Adrasan by a British warplane. Saint Didier, flying a Turkish flag at its stern, sought refuge in Antalya Harbor. Later that day, two British aircraft attacked the ship 400 meters offshore. The first torpedo missed, causing a massive wave near the marina. The second struck the stern, and the ship began to sink. Five soldiers lost their lives, while 275 others—15 of them injured—were rescued by local fishermen.
